Communication Secrets of Great Leaders

How do you feel about the advice presented in the article? Do you agree or disagree? Why?
How can we, as a leadership class, apply these "secrets?" (Within the class/outside of it? Give examples!)
Which "communication secret" do you think to be the most effective? Which would you like to challenge yourself to use/use more frequently?
Which skills do we need to begin applying as a class, in order to ensure effectiveness? Which are we already successfully using?
Are there any skills we need to focus on, specifically in upcoming events? (Peer-to-Peer?)
Why is communication such an essential role in effective leadership? In everything that we, as individuals, do?Communication Secrets of Great Leaders

How do stereotypes affect leadership?

What part in the video sticks out most for you?

Why are these two almost perfect for doing this poem?

What leaders now, or in the past, have gone against the stereotypes of the time?

Have you had to overcome a stereotype to be a leader (go against what you're told to do)

Dannie's Post

Questions:
In this short, but sweet TED Talks, Derek Sivers discusses the lessons of a video. He mentions the "shirtless dancing guy" type, would you say you have similar leadership qualities? Why or why not? If why not, what type would you be in the video shown? Do you agree with his way of seeing how to start a movement? Why or Why not? If you saw a shirtless guy dancing around would you join him? Explain.

David's Post

This is a speech by Sir Winston Churchill, commonly known as the "finest hour speech."

Here is the mini summary and questions:

"Communication and oratory skills are a crucial skill for any leader to posses. They are necessary in order to garner support and respect from your team. As well, they are necessary in order to galvanize and inspire your team. The following speech was orated by British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, on June 18, 1940 to the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Following their defeat, the government of France sought an armistice with Nazi Germany. Great Britain and her Dominions stood alone against an impending Nazi invasion. In this speech, Churchill warned the people of Great Britain of the coming attack and galvanized them.

Questions:
1. How compelling or inspiring do you find Churchill's speech?
2. Can you think of any other leaders who can carry out inspiring speeches similar to this?
3. Do you think that good communications and oratory skills are an important skill for a leader to posses? If or if not, why?

Questions:
1- "Throughout history leaders have forged new paths for others to follow."
What do you think this means? Should the followers be challenged to make their own path?

2- In your opinion, what was the most inspirational/motivational quote from this video? Why?

3- The video says that less than 1% of entrepreneurs come from extremely rich families. Does this surprise you? Why or why not?

4- "A leader is one who knows the way..." Do you believe this quote? Could someone be leader without 'knowing the way?'

5- What is the biggest message you got from this video?

Lollipop Moment

We often classify leadership as the ability to do something that fundamentally changes the world. Drew Dudley challenges the traditional view of leadership by stating that instead of changing the world, we must change people's understanding of it. When we transform someone else's understanding, they become inspired to do the same, making a chain reaction of awesome. So, have you ever had a lollipop moment? Or have you had the opportunity to provide someone else with a similar moment? Has this video changed your perceptions of leadership? In what ways can we be conscious of the needs of the student body that even one person can leave IDCI feeling like they too have the power to change a life?

Tribal Leadership

"As people see the world, so do they behave".  Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

There are many great ideas presented in this talk on tribal leadership.  Consider the following questions in your response:
What tribes do we have co-existing at IDCI?  What is the result?
The presenter reveals five different points from which the individual views the world.  What would you identify as your view?  Considering the different views that individuals within our community might hold, is there one thing that unites us?  What might that be?  Consider IDCI as a whole.  What would you say is our current view as a community?  How do we move forward?  How do we reach the other tribes within our community?  Feel free to comment on any other ideas that inspired you as you watched the clip.

*Media Review: Shawn Achor's talk on Happiness

In Shawn Anchor's TED Talk, "The Happy Secret to Better Work" he covers some pretty interesting ideas regarding the secret and power of happiness.  Your task:  Complete a media review.  There are three parts to this:
1)  Write a summary of his talk
2)  Identify/explain how this media piece connects to our leadership course.  Why should we pay attention to it?  Or, similarly, why shouldn't we pay it any heed?
3)  What did you connect to on a personal level?  How could this impact you going forward?  How would you like it to impact you?

*For very rough guidelines, consider writing a good paragraph addressing each of these questions.  Then, if you feel that there is anything else you want to add or address, feel free to include another paragraph to do so.  I look forward to reading your thoughts.
