David's Post

This is a speech by Sir Winston Churchill, commonly known as the "finest hour speech."

Here is the mini summary and questions:

"Communication and oratory skills are a crucial skill for any leader to posses. They are necessary in order to garner support and respect from your team. As well, they are necessary in order to galvanize and inspire your team. The following speech was orated by British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, on June 18, 1940 to the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Following their defeat, the government of France sought an armistice with Nazi Germany. Great Britain and her Dominions stood alone against an impending Nazi invasion. In this speech, Churchill warned the people of Great Britain of the coming attack and galvanized them.

Questions:
1. How compelling or inspiring do you find Churchill's speech?
2. Can you think of any other leaders who can carry out inspiring speeches similar to this?
3. Do you think that good communications and oratory skills are an important skill for a leader to posses? If or if not, why?

  1. I did not find it inspiring because I did not understand it. The only other person that I know of that had good speeches was Hitler, he was a good leader but not for what he was leading. Any leader needs good communication skills because they need to be clear in what they are trying to do and they need to make an impact on people.

  2. I found Churchill's speech very effective. It got the main message across and probably made many people aware of the situation and what needed to happen during that time. The one other leader i thought of when listening to this speech was Adolf Hitler. Though he was most notoriously known for the things he did during WW2, he was one of the best leaders that ive ever learned about. He was able to get nations all over Europe to follow in his beliefs and promises. To his supporters, his speeches were probably incredibly powerful, and inspiring. I think good communications and oratory skills are definitely important skills for a leader to possess. People dont always follow by example. Words to me are the most powerful things in the world. I think good communications and oratory skills help make a leader, a better leader.

good comunitcation skills are a very important aspect to being a leader because you have to be able to put your messages out to everyone so they can understand it.

  5. 1. How compelling or inspiring do you find Churchill's speech?

I found it somewhat compelling but it was hard to follow, so it lacked alot of inspiration. Which made it alot less compelling of a speech.

    2. Can you think of any other leaders who can carry out inspiring speeches similar to this?

I still think the most inspiring speech i have ever heard was the Martin Luthor King Jr "I have a dream speech". King knew how to keep the crowd interested, which is key to make sure they listen to your overall message.

    3. Do you think that good communications and oratory skills are an important skill for a leader to posses? If or if not, why?

Yes I think it is a very important skill for leaders to have. If they don't have good communication and oratory skills then nobody will follow them and get/understand their message.

  6. Although this video was hard to understand and follow, I felt it was very inspiring. One man is leading an entire army to brace themselves against Nazi Germany, probably one of the toughest armies of all time. This would be very tough for me to do.

Hitler was one of the biggest dicks of all time, but also one of the smartest. For him to be able to manipulate an entire country to believe what he believed in and, to have what he was doing remain oblivious to the rest of the world is astounding and unbelieveable. His speeches were also inspiring and got the entire country to follow him. This will also never happen again.

You have to have good communication skills to get points across and to get an entire country to stand behind you, so yes good communication/oratory skills are very important in a good leader.

  7. I feel that Churchill's speech was written for people who would understand what he is saying. I don't think that many of us in 2013 would be able to understand what he is talking about at all because we aren't raised in the time period when the speech was made. Because I cannot understand it I didn’t overly get anything out of it. If I had to think of a inspirational speech off the top of my head would be the speech that Ian Tyson gave earlier this year. Although it wasn't like Churchill's speech, the content, it still made me feel motivated and made me want to do positive things that i might not have done before. To me I'd consider Ian a very good leader, not anything like Ghandi or anyone like that but he still motivates people and has all of the qualities a leader has. In order to display the message that you want everyone to seeyou have to have good communication skills. Otherwise nobody will follow you because they don't understand what you are trying to get at.

  8. 1. I found Churchill's speech very inspiring. He knew exactly what to say and how, and it was very powerful.
    2. I believe Terrance McKenna is worthy of a comparison.
    3. Good communication skills are definitely necessary to a leader, because if you can't communicate properly what you are trying to say to your followers, then you will be leading them astray, and doing more harm than good.

  9. This video was a little difficult for me to follow so personally it wasn't very inspiring for me but I believe that many other people found this speech to be very inspiring. I can't think of any other leaders who can carry out inspiring speeches similar to this. Yes I do think good communications and oratory skills are an important skill for a leader to possess because you need to get a clear message across to people and listen to what other people have to say.
